In this basic dictionary you can find the most common terms used in the ancient art of Feng Shui.

A

Cause an effect in the room in order to establish and attract certain energies.

Introduce a basic vibration (sounds, smells …) in the room, which is selected according to the use and enhances the actions of those who inhabit it.

B

Octagonal arrangement of the trigrams.

By linking the trigrams with the cardinal points, the opposing trigrams are opposite and balance each other. This is the order for Yin Feng Shui, the Feng Shui of the Dead.

By linking the trigrams with the cardinal points, the trigrams create tensions with each other. This is the order for Yang Feng Shui, the Feng Shui of the Living.

Analysis system for properties, houses, rooms, etc. The starting point is the orientation of the object to be examined on the ground, that is, the cardinal direction.

One of the four heavenly animals. The turtle describes the area behind the house, using the compass method: link with north.

D

It is an important level of observation when interpreting the Bagua energies that are being established. Represents expansion in space.

E

Energies that manifest on earth, the properties of which can be described using the Chinese zodiac signs.

It works on two levels: gross cleansing (ordering, cleaning) and purification on the subtle energy level.

They arise during the harmonization of the floor plan in preparation for the Bagua analysis, the extensions are an energetic plus at the space level.

F

The Five Elements (Movements) are the five ways in which chi energy is expressed according to Chinese philosophy:

  • Wood
  • Fire
  • Earth
  • Metal
  • Water

It is a level of interpretation, it relates the energy of the Bagua sectors with the formal design of the space.

It is a level of interpretation in Feng Shui, it translates the function of a room into energy qualities and verifies the compatibility with respect to the Bagua sectors.

G

It deals with living processes on earth and their effects on people.

One of the four celestial animals, the dragon describes the area to the right of a house. In the compass method it is the link with the East.

H

The four Heavenly Animals are: black tortoise, white tiger, green dragon, red phoenix. They are a symbolic paraphrase of the ideal location of a building in Feng Shui, which is thus protected by the formation of these animals.

Celestial influences, which, according to Chinese Astrology, have an effect on terrestrial life in combination with the Terrestrial Branches.

K

Protection number of a person in the Lo Shu box. The position in the Lo Shui determines which effect can be beneficial or blocking.

L

Chinese geomancy compass, main tool of the Compass School.

M

“Bright room or hall”, a place where energies from different directions converge.

They arise during the harmonization of the floor plan in preparation for the Bagua analysis and are non-existent areas of space.

P

One of the four heavenly animals. The phoenix describes the free space in front of a house, using the compass method: link with the south.

Q

Universal energy that is inherent in all things and appearances, vital energy.

S

Misdirected energy, which must be avoided or harmonized in Feng Shui. Sha formation occurs when: Chi flows too fast, too linear or too slow or stagnates.

T

The eight trigrams represent the basic energetic qualities that describe the phases of change in Chi.

W

Y

Literally “sunny side of the mountain”, it corresponds to the active and creative principle.

Literally “cloudy weather on the side of a mountain”, Yin corresponds to the passive and absorbing principle of polar energies.
